 July 22, 2013 - The July edition of the Playa del Mar Newsletter has hit the stands.  February 25, 2013 - On February 20th, Playa del Mar Manager Tania Gonzalez, along with Board Treasurer Fred Nesbitt, launched another "Coffee with the Manager" meeting. Conceived to elicit direct input from unit owners about maintenance issues and building operations, our intrepid Manager took aim at a laundry list of completed, in process and impending construction projects. The rundown included status updates for the Cooling Tower repairs, paver maintenance, pool heaters, garage leaks, balcony railings, storm-proof impact windows, air conditioning risers, WiFi in the pool area and concrete restoration. Also discussed was the check signing redundancy deployed by the administration to insure accuracy and integrity. Ever frugal, the Board transitioned to a more competitive natural gas vendor and approved a utility audit to determine prospective entitlement to a refund.  February 18, 2013 - The Playa del Mar Newsletter staff just released their February edition. In her Manager's Report, Playa del Mar Property Manager Tania Gonzalez marks the satisfactory completion of expansion joint repairs and the upcoming concrete rehabilitation. In the President's Corner, Board President Ray Garcia cites teamwork as the key to achieving the association's structural objectives on budget. July 25, 2012 - On July 25th, Playa del Mar Manager Tania Gonzalez convened another "Coffee with the Manager" event, a forum conceived to elicit direct input from unit owners about their concerns and priorities. Our Manager updated the Balcony Floor Resurfacing, admonishing that its not too late to sign up. Gonzalez reviewed the progress of the balcony railing repairs and informed attendees about preparations for the upcoming Concrete Rehabilitation Project.  April 18, 2012 - The Playa del Mar Board of Directors convened a regular meeting on April 12, 2012. After Treasurer Fred Nesbitt placated bean counting residents with a budgetary surplus and Secretary Carolyn Kervin updated attendees about the Landscaping Committee's efforts to beautify our home, Larry Hager detailed the settlement terms between PDM and SPS and described a prospective resolution of the balcony floors dilemma. Michael Hickman made a presentation about the PDM fitness centers and Fred Nesbitt reviewed issues surrounding the Ocean Lounge. Vice President Mike DeMonia outlined how the association's inexplicably neglected cooling towers will be repaired without burdening unit owners with an assessment. March 26, 2012 - On March 21st, Playa del Mar Manager Tania Gonzalez convened a meeting conceived to elicit direct input from unit owners about maintenance issues and building operations. Also attended by Board Secretary Carolyn Kervin and Treasurer Fred Nesbitt, the "Coffee with the Manager" event brought focus to the deteriorating cascading water feature that adorns our building entrance.  February 29, 2012 - Last night, Playa del Mar unit owners installed three trusted neighbors to round out their Board of Directors. To avoid the irregularities that occassionally earmarked previous elections, the event was conducted by the PDM election committee under the supervision of the association's legal counsel. In eliciting a voting plurality, the decision was largely interpreted as a vote of confidence in the current board's management of association affairs. Former Board member Mike DeMonia was returned to the board, joining Mike Hickman and Fred Nesbitt who were re-elected to the PDM governing panel. Following the election, the newly fleshed out board asked Ray Garcia to continue as board President and Mike DeMonia to serve as Vice President. Carolyn Kervin and Fred Nesbitt were reelected to their respective positions of Secretary and Treasurer.  January 22, 2012 - The January 2012 edition of the PDM Newsletter is filled with important information about our association. The newsletter describes an innovative In-House Maintenance program, wherein residents can hire maintenance staffers to effect minor repairs at a reasonable price. In 2012, the PDM administration plans to keep its commitment to "Green Your Routine", having been repeatedly recognized by the City for our pioneering recycling efforts.  December 6, 2011 - In keeping with the new administration's policy of fully apprising association members about Playa del Mar's evolving challenges, Board President Ray Garcia compiled a 6-month summary of financial, maintenance and administrative accomplishments and objectives. While he reviews the budget, repairs to balcony railings and floors, impending structural rehabilitation, the insurance impact of FEMA remapping Playa del Mar into a high-risk flood zone, a new in-house maintenance service and other relevant issues, he assures members that all conflicted agreements entered into by the association have been reversed.  November 18, 2011 - On November 2, 2011, the Playa del Mar Board of Directors convened a meeting to fill a Board vacancy, ratify several earlier Board decisions and offer a presentation about current and future in-house maintenance projects. On November 17, 2011, PDM members attended the Annual Budget Presentation - a preview of next year's spending plan - followed by a regularly scheduled Board Meeting.  September 24, 2011 - Following a year and a half hiatus, the Playa del Mar newsletter has been revived. Shortly after the Spring edition was released in March of 2010, Newsletter founder Phyllis Carter faced a quandary. Caught between a hostile Board and her commitment to keep her neighbors informed about issues that impact their lives, Phyllis grudgingly resigned. Fortunately, recent changes in the current Board's philosophical and operational dynamic has cleared the way to reviving an independent Newsletter. Former PDM Board member and Newsletter staffer Fred Nesbitt stepped to the plate and pulled together the Autumn 2011 PDM Newsletter. In his President's Report, newly elected Board President Ray Garcia explains that the association can only move ahead by aggressively pursuing a policy of inclusion.  March 31, 2010 - Spring is upon us - as is the seasonal Playa del Mar newsletter. The Spring edition features a wide variety of Association updates, commencing with a letter from Board President Bob Boffa. In his Message from the Board President, he comments on improvements to the garage elevator lobby, new fire safety elements, gym equipment, the media room, as well as repairs to building infiltrations, the pool area rehabilitation, and a long-needed rules revision. We await the Governor's decision to either Veto or Not Veto the Sprinkler Retrofit Relief Bill. The Building Report expands on the President's update, summarizing the "team" rehabilitation of the front entrance, a collaborative effort by - among others - Engineer Chris Palms, and Decorating Committee sparkplugs Annette Gamburg and Joan Weinberg. Other issues tackled in the Report are Hurricane preparations, our heating problem, flood and leak prevention and our informative house channel. PDM residents are benefitting from a unique synergism adapted to our difficult economic environment - a Board policy of squeezing extra milage out of every dime and Management talent capable of successfully implementing that policy!  September 3, 2009 - Sorry about the delay! It behooved us to forestall publishing the Summer 2009 Newsletter to better encapsulate the many significant changes that Playa del Mar has recently experienced. After freeing Playa del Mar of Continental Management, the Board effectively filled the resulting management void with a blend of in house assets and new blood. To replace Continental's Sam Aponté, the PDM board propitiously secured the services of manager Paul Swan, an impressively credentialed, well-referenced manager whose experience includes 17 years of administering The Galleon, our sister association a few buildings north of PDM. Additionally, the Newsletter staff answers the rhetorical query "Who has been Watching the Store" with an overview of Playa del Mar's new management team, applauding the reconstructive efforts of working Director Michael Hickman, Chief Engineer Chris Palm, new Manager Paul Swan and Assistant Manager Rosie Bowers along with new secretary Ashley Knapp. Correctly advising unit owners to "Know your PDM Employees", the newsletter summarizes relevant background data about the ubiquitous Mr. Swan, new security chief José Dorta and front office sparkplug Ashley Knapp. PDM's commitment to sound environmental policy is reflected in "Green Your Routine", a city-sponsored recycling program that PDM enthusiastically supports. "Toothpick Beach!!" graphically describes the marking stakes delimiting the turtle nests that proliferate along the Galt Mile beach. Although it is the only dedicated local asset that we receive from Broward County in exchange for 26% of our tax dollars, to prevent the Galt Mile Reading Room from falling prey to county politics, Save the Galt Mile Library exclaims our participation in the neighborhood's effort to preserve this irreplaceable community asset.  March 1, 2009 - On February 18, 2009, Florida Governor Charlie Crist convened a "Town Hall" meeting for Galt Mile residents at the Beach Community Center. Invited by the Galt Mile Community Association, the Governor moderated an early afternoon Q & A "conversation" with 300 area residents and their public officials. While responding to questions about unemployment, how budget shortfalls could cripple education and medical inequities befalling the gay community, the Governor patiently awaited an invitation to address the meeting's undeclared political purpose, the reason he selected the Galt Mile neighborhood for his Town Meeting. Finally, Playa del Mar's Fred Nesbitt broke the tension, questioning whether it was "a good idea" to expose the surrounding communities to prospective catastrophic consequences - such as those threatened by the planned Calypso gasworks. As Nesbitt summarized the project's drawbacks and conjured a disaster scenario, the Governor announced, "How can we support that? Its GONE!" Since scores of communities across the country have recently expended hundreds of $millions to unsuccessfully address comparable threats, the Governor's decision was a testament to our neighborhood's unity and determination. Working with members of neighboring associations on the "No Calypso! Committee", other Playa del Mar residents joined Nesbitt at the forefront of this neighborhood campaign to expunge this potential holocaust. Linda Eidinger helped develop some of the salient "talking points" Nesbitt used to productively engage the Governor. An active participant on the Galt Mile Advisory Board whose members initially conceived the "No Calypso Committee", Rich Solewin also attended the meeting!  February 7, 2009 - With the Playa del Mar Annual Meeting and adjunctive Board elections around the corner, the Winter 2009 edition of the PDM Newsletter has hit the street. November 9, 2008 - Although understandably tardy, the Fall 2008 edition of the PDM Newsletter is available for your perusal. Two points! First, the Newsletter staff has never processed more critical content than has been encapsulated in the Fall (October) Edition. Second, to afford the harried Newsletter staff some much needed "breathing space", future Newsletters will be seasonally entitled instead of being identified by the anticipated month of publication. As usual, you can view the Actual Newsletter or the web based versions with links and added graphics. Of course, the Fall issue features Sam Aponté's Manager’s Report, a "Know Your Employees" item about Geraldine Portuhondo, a "Meet Your Neighbors" piece about Dr. Vincent and Marie Puglisi, as well as a Tidbits section detailing accrued benefits of the Galt Mile Security Patrol. Depicting how Playa del Mar is actually seeing some financial light, the September 16th Board Meeting was a testament to Treasurer Fred Nesbitt's unrelenting fiscal perspicacity and the Board's "debt-free" operational policy.  September 24, 2008 - On September 23, 2008, the City of Fort Lauderdale issued a precautionary water advisory. While performing routine maintenance on aeration system blowers at the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant, almost a quart of lubricant was accidentally spilled into an open water basin, prompting the City to immediately shut down the Fiveash water pumps and begin water testing to ensure that water quality was not affected. The advisory stated "As a precautionary measure, customers are advised to use bottled water for drinking and cooking. Customers served by City water are advised not to consume or cook with any tap water (even if boiled). Tap water may be used for washing and bathing." The warning also included Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Port Everglades Authority, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors, and sections of Davie and Tamarac. On Septemnber 24th, The City of Fort Lauderdale Public Works Department lifted the water advisory for customers in Fort Lauderdale and the other communities.  August 8, 2008 - It took a bit longer than usual, but the PDM newshounds were able to finally pull the Playa del Mar Newsletter together. With everyone rabidly barking at us, the newsletter "pack" was forced to shelve any vestige of "alpha" behavior and heel. Despite having been hounded by snarling proponents on both sides of a biting issue, the staff doggedly licked their wounds and pawed the computer before rolling over and fetching the content. Its a dog eat dog world. Can you guess what the lead issue is? WOOF! The Playa del Mar Board of Directors updates the association's finances and our new Manager, Sam Aponte, gives a special report. June 26, 2008 - Hurricane season began on June 1st. The Playa del Mar Board of Directors updated the Association's Hurricane Policy for 2008.  June 10, 2008 - You've doubtless heard - a French Energy company called SUEZ applied for a license to build a gasworks adjacent to our beach. The Calypso Deepwater Port (DWP) is a planned transfer station, enabling tankers carrying liquefied natural gas to dump their load, vaporize the liquid fuel into a gaseous state and send it through a pipeline (the Calypso pipeline) towards Port Everglades where it will be introduced into the Florida Gas Transmission Pipeline System for distribution across the region. Since the planned placement of this “Deepwater Port” for the offloading of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is 7 to 10 miles from the densely populated Galt Mile beach, it cleary affects every resident of Playa del Mar, the Galt Mile neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale, especially those inhabiting the Barrier Island. In consideration of the holocaust this facility could potentially precipitate, the Playa del Mar Board of Directors has passed a resolution opposing the construction of this gasworks adjacent to our beach. April 30, 2008 - The April Playa del Mar Newsletter is here! The doggedly determined del Marians detail decorations, describe “Director” developments, discuss domiciled “Dogs”, and document disconcerting dangers of a deepwater port dedicated to delivering deadly Liquid Natural Gas directly across from the Galt Mile beach! Summaries of the February 19th, February 26th and April 8th PDM Board of Directors meetings, a report from the Treasurer, the Manager’s report and a construction progress review are designed to edify out-of-residence members about the current state of their home. Peppered with human interest entries, the Newsletter describes the February 23rd “Evening Under the Stars” event organized by the Social Committee while the “Meet Your Neighbors” segment targets Linda and Marshall Eidinger. Refusing to be constrained by the traditional six-page size limitation, a Special Report was added to address several critical issues. The report describes “The Calypso Project”, a life-threatening plan to construct a deepwater port directly off the Galt Mile beach for the offloading and vaporization of Liquid Natural Gas. On the positive side, a report by Major Hanstein of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department confirmed that local crime dropped by 6% compared to last year.  March 30, 2008 - The Playa del Mar Board of Directors recently sent a constituent mailing containing several new PDM efficiency initiatives. Included was a request that association members share information about contractors deserving of recommendation. The office will compile a member-accessible database of these references to help PDM residents avoid hiring vendors or contractors whose credentials are questionable. To facilitate expedited unit owner communications, they also included a request for members' email addresses. Additionally, the Board is forming a host of useful Advisory Committees to more effectively address PDM's operational requisites. By pro-actively recruiting participants, the association aspires to take advantage of its greatest asset... DIVERSITY. Consistent with the Board's policy of keeping both in and out-of-residence PDM members abreast of critical issues and "Quality of Life" improvements, Board President Bob Boffa included a letter entitled "Progress Report Update" in the correspondence. Bob dispels disconcerting rumors about a mysterious assessment, clarifying that reserve funds provided for in the association budget will finance planned PDM decorations, obviating the need for a special assessment. He reports that PDM's projected operating deficit was diminished by $160,000, defective pool deck furniture is being replaced and a garage cleanup is planned for the summer, minimizing unavoidable inconvenience. Having successfully negotiated an understanding with contractor SPS, delayed repairs to blistered balcony railings, the damaged front portal roof and the front parking decks have all been scheduled - at no incremental cost to the association. He applauds the new Board's productive cooperation, thanking Vice President Dan Lecht, Secretary Annette Gamburg, Treasurer Fred Nesbitt and Director Carolyn Kervin for their teamwork.  March 8, 2008 - Like a cleansing northern wind, the people have spoken, again reconstituting the Playa del Mar Board of Directors. Over the past year, Playa residents were subjected to a disconcerting, frustrating exercise in unproductive political machinations. Anyone trying to engender progress was forced to take one step back for every two steps forward. Fed up with the political infighting and the unsolicited opinions of self-serving outsiders, voters cast the recent election as a mandate to cooperate or hit the road. However, old habits die hard. Shortly after the election, Mike DeMonia and Grace Antonello resigned from the Board, leaving President Bob Boffa, Vice President Dan Lecht, Secretary Annette Gamburg, Treasurer Fred Nesbitt and Director Carolyn Kervin to do the heavy lifting. Once settled in, the Board members will select two additional volunteers to fill out the shorthanded panel. Packed with information about the changes our home is undergoing, this JUMBO scope of work contains former Manager Keith Tannenbaum’s last Manager’s Report - detailing some of his parting objectives. Summaries of the November 15th Budget Meeting and the December 13th Board Meeting should help clarify out some of PDM’s governance issues. Hands-on construction honcho Mike DeMonia runs down PDM’s remaining structural obstacles while emphasizing a policy of cost control. Newsletter staffers met with Broward Commissioner Ken Keechl and Congressman Ron Klein, who addressed the upcoming Beach Restoration and recent efforts to moderate runaway Insurance Premiums. Details surrounding the recall of former Board member Mark Stern are reviewed. A list of PDM’s newest residents has been compiled and published and condolences extended to Board member Grace Antonello upon the passing of her father, longtime PDM resident Gennaro DeMaio. While swimming in data points useful for PDM residents and visitors, the juicy “Tidbits” section also sadly acknowledges the passing of former Board member Mike Marsalona, who will be missed by all!

October 20, 2007 - The October edition of the Playa del Mar Newsletter is hot off the presses. Phyllis Carter, Rich Solewin, Lance Shaw, Barbara Mancuso and Fred Nesbitt assembled another monument to balanced condo journalism, illuminating issues important to every Playa del Mar unit owner. In addition to the actual October 2007 Newsletter, each of the issue’s articles has been coded for the internet and posted on our Playa del Mar web site! This final edition for 2007 features PDM Manager Keith Tannenbaum’s fact-packed Manager’s Report and a summary of the September 25th Board Meeting. A critical issue undertaken at the Board Meeting, Association Finances, received additional focus in an article devoted to PDM budgetary statistics. An article entitled Vanguard Security (the company contracted to upgrade association protection and safety) introduces Joy Puertas, a 9-year Vanguard veteran who courteously serves as the front reception desk hub of our new security strategy. A miscellaneous catchall for intriguing Association news bytes, “Tidbits” frames the biographical background and daily challenges faced by our maintenance wizard, José Lucero; offers highlights from a recent PDM Barbeque; details the critical role played by our new DVR multiplexor and videocamera array in successfully resolving the mysterious disappearance of some momentarily unattended valuables - and other “curious” PDM events. August 3, 2007 - When it rains, it pours. 50% larger than previous editions, the July 2007 Playa del Mar Newsletter has arrived! Fred Nesbitt has joined Phyllis Carter’s irrepressible band of roving reporters, filling veteran Harriet Healy’s shoes. In addition to presenting the Newsletter in its original form, the articles have also been adapted to the internet.  May 18, 2007 - Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Playa del Mar is emerging from the construction cloud in which it was enveloped for the past few years. While we continue to make organizational and construction progress, a great deal of work remains to be done. By renegotiating unfavorable contracts and reorganizing operational protocols, the Board and General Manager have uncovered financial offsets useful for relieving our assessment strain. Board President Bob Boffa wants to keep everyone apprised about the hard work and tough decisions that fuel every step forward in Playa del Mar’s reincarnation.
